In Reclaiming the Canaanite Earth, Reem Alnatsheh explores Canaanite mythologies through an ecofeminist perspective, recontextualizing these ancient narratives to address contemporary issues related to identity, ecology, and resistance. The project delves into the deep connections between Canaanite beliefs and natural cycles—particularly agricultural and seasonal—revealing a worldview based on harmony rather than domination.

A central focus is on the goddess Anath, a feminine archetype of love and war, who plays a key role in maintaining natural balance alongside Baal, the god of rain and fertility. Through the myth in which Anath defeats Mot, the personification of drought, by crushing him and turning him into bread, the artist evokes human—especially female—efforts to preserve life in the face of death, scarcity, and ecological destruction.

By revisiting these myths, Alnatsheh questions the relationship between nature and power, emphasizing the role of women as guardians of ancestral knowledge. Ecofeminism, central to this approach, offers a way to rethink the relationship between humans and the environment, revealing how systems of domination have historically oppressed both women and ecosystems. The project thus presents a contemporary reading of mythological figures as critical tools to nourish cultural memory and inform today’s artistic practices.
