This mural intertwines two parallel narratives—the Palestinian experience and that of Native American communities—drawing attention to their shared histories of resilience, cultural pride, and resistance. At its center stands a Palestinian girl in a traditional embroidered dress, steadfast and dignified in her identity, facing Jerusalem and the Apartheid Wall that surrounds the city of Bethlehem. On the left side of the mural, a Native American girl from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe stands with equal strength, facing her ancestral land and cultural heritage. The eagle, an important symbol of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, adorns her traditional clothing.
A closer look at the feathered crown on the Native girl’s head reveals that several feathers are missing. Ahmed intentionally incorporates this detail as a symbol of colonial efforts to erase Indigenous heritage and culture. Yet the feathers that remain outnumber those that are absent, a deliberate artistic choice that conveys a powerful message: despite attempts at erasure and dispossession, Indigenous steadfastness, cultural survival, and resistance endure.
By placing these two figures in an overlapping composition, Ahmed emphasizes the solidarity between the two peoples and highlights their shared struggle to preserve identity, culture, and homeland in the face of ongoing colonial oppression.
